Obsession with AFL Stirs Debate between Victorians

The most popular sport in Victoria since it was first formed with 8 teams in 1896.

In 2011, there were 650,373 football club members across 17 clubs. With non-members, this number could go into the millions.

With the introduction of 2 new clubs recently, it doesn’t sound as if our love for sport is dwindling.

But are we obsessed?

I talked to a couple of AFL fans, as well as Deakin University Lecturer in Sociology Dr Bernie East, to see what they had to say.

Is it just a part of being Australian and having healthy, aware citizens? Or is it too much, and overshadows more important issues?
